For artists such as Bellini, Titian, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, and Rubens, Dionysus was a figure with multiple and often paradoxical functions. He was not only the god of intoxication and pleasure--especially the pleasures of love and of dance--but he also presided over fertility in all of its forms, agricultural and human fertility as well as literary and artistic fecundity. Dionysus' connection with the afterlife was used to transform the god into a force and incarnation of salvation, thus creating a fusion between the apparently contradictory worlds of the pagan past and the Christian present | ||
