| Summary: | One of the most significant shifts in contemporary art during the past two decades concerns artists and collectives who have moved their artistic focus from representation to direct social action. This book shows why this transition might change our understanding of artistic production in general and make us reconsider the role of art in society. The Art of Direct Action gathers internationally recognized artists, scholars, and experts in the field of socially engaged art to reflect upon historical developments in this field and explore the role that German artist Joseph Beuys's concept of social sculpture played in its evolution. The contributions provide theoretical reflections, historical analysis, and critical debates about exemplary socially engaged art projects since the 1970s, examining the strategies, opportunities, and failures of this practice. Dieser Sammelband „gibt eine Einführung in die Ursprünge der Sozialen Plastik und ihrer Weiterentwicklung unter dem Schirmbegriff der sozial engagierten Kunst bis in die Gegenwart. Die besondere Eigenart ist, dass Verbindungslinien zwischen zwei meist getrennt erforschten Phänomenen hergestellt werden: Dem deutschsprachig geprägten Diskurs über Beuys Soziale Plastik und dem englischsprachig dominierten Diskurs über socially engaged art. Die große Anzahl an Interviews bietet dabei einen Überblick über Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die aufgrund jahrzehntelanger Erfahrung im Feld die kunstwissenschaftlichen Texte mit einem Blickwinkel aus der Praxis erweitern. Zeitzeugen wie Caroline Tisdall und Rainer Rappmann schildern ihren Eindruck von Beuys aus erster Hand, während Künstlerinnen wie Marina Naprushkina die Relevanz und Aktualität der Bestimmung ihrer gegenwärtigen sozial engagierten Kunstprojekte diskutieren. Als kleiner Kritikpunkt ist das Ende des Bandes zu nennen, denn es schließt recht abrupt mit drei Interviews. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich, dass das Buch von seinem Anfang bis zum abschließenden Interview den zwei großen Leitthemen anhand klarer Fragestellungen folgt.
